Staffordshire Bull Terrier Health

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is generally  and statistically a healthy and robust dog. The short coat of this breed requires little grooming other than an occasional bushing and a bath. General care of nails, ears and teeth are the same as they would be for any other breed.

In warm weather the Stafford prefers plenty of shade and access to water, watch carefully to be sure that your Stafford doesn’t become overheated during intense play or exercise. A child’s wading pool is a popular choice among Stafford owners to help keep dogs cool. In cool weather expect extra cuddling and cozying up

Luckily the most serious health issues in the breed, L2HGA and Hereditary cataracts have a DNA test to identify them. Responsible and conscientious breeders test all breeding stock to avoid producing dogs affected by these diseases.

Occasional skin conditions to crop up from time to time, incidences are much higher in dogs produced from 2 blue parents.

When searching for a Stafford puppy, ask your potential breeder about both parents health generally and their testing status.
