JEC Newsletter – 01/17/2026 – SBTCA JEC – The Stafford: Correct Gait

“JEC Journal – The Stafford: Correct Gait”

“Gait: Free, powerful and agile with economy of effort. Legs moving parallel when viewed from front or rear. Discernible drive from hind legs.”

The Stafford’s movement is clean and fairly simple. “Free, Powerful, Agile.” The Stafford should show “discernible drive” from the rear. Front reach and rear drive should be balanced. There should no wasted energy in movement.

When the Stafford is moving away you should view its rear pads pushing off effortlessly in a straight line. Look for the rear foot pad to show when the Stafford shows “discernible drive from the rear.”

He should be able to easily gait without being run like a sporting breed.

Movement can be viewed on a loose lead at a slight jog, handler is usually walking.  No need for exhibitors to run Staffords in an extended trot.
